I’ve been to Amsterdam more than ten times. At this point, I’ve basically earned a degree in having a good time here.
Every visit teaches me a new trick. A better route. A smarter splurge. A stronger drink. You get the idea.
This list is for you if you’re planning a few days in Amsterdam and want to do it right.
First, some quick Amsterdam travel tips
Where to stay
After staying in Amsterdam many times, I’ve learned most of the dos and don’ts for the city… especially when it comes to where to stay.
As a result, I have a whole article on where to stay in the city, from neighborhoods to specific hotels and hostels. If you just want one solid recommendation and don’t want to overthink it, Hotel Estheréa is one of the best overall value hotels in Amsterdam.
Bundle your plans!
If you plan to do any sightseeing, you need to get the Go City Amsterdam Pass. I have personally used it every time I’ve gone to the city, and it has saved me TONS of money. Seriously.
It covers almost all of the most expensive things that you should do like:
It’s a super easy pass, that just uses a QR code and you can make reservations on the app too. You can get a Go City pass here if you want to use it to help you save.
Walk, wander, and get your bearings
1. Take a Free Walking Tour
I start every trip with a free walking tour. It’s fun, helpful, and the guides are full of chaotic local facts.
Make sure to tip well (at least $10!). I usually use FreeTour.com, and it’s super easy to book.
2. Explore the 9 Streets
Make sure you stroll the De Negen Straatjes, it’s Amsterdam’s most photogenic area.
Boutique shops, vintage stores, and perfect canal views are all here.
3. Walk along Prinsengracht
Now if you’re looking for the prettiest canal in Amsterdam, that’s Prinsengracht.

You’ll want to stop every two minutes to take a photo, so expect a long visit.
4. Visit the Red Light District
It’s not just about prostitution. The Red Light District is full of history, people-watching, and some very bold window displays.
If you want to learn about the area, the Red Lights Secrets Museum has TONS of information. I would highly recommend a visit, it’s super interesting.
Don’t miss these Amsterdam museums
5. Rijksmuseum
It took me a while to finally visit the most famous museum in Amsterdam, but I am quite glad I did.
The Rijksmuseum is huge, beautiful, and full of classic Dutch art. Book this museum early, because it sells out.
6. Van Gogh Museum
The Van Gogh Museum hits different. The Van Gogh paintings are as iconic as you would expect. Seeing his real paintings feels oddly emotional.
Yes, you need a timed ticket. And yes, this is an absolutely can-not-miss spot. The museum is super well setup with tons of information about his history, and the different eras of his paintings. Plus they have some of his most popular pieces which is a huge plus!
7. Moco Museum
The Moco Museum is my favorite museum in Amsterdam. It’s packed with Banksy, Warhol, and modern art that actually keeps your attention.
Lots of photo ops too! I would consider this the most interesting kind of museum I’ve ever been in, and I’ve visited this same one more than 3 times. It’s a must visit if you want a fun, cool, and sometimes political museum to visit.
8. Anne Frank Haus
By my 3rd visit, I still hadn’t been able to get a ticket to the Anne Frank Haus.
So heed my advice, book online six weeks ahead. If you’re a little late, you can get tickets through tours like this one.
9. Amsterdam Cheese Museum
Whenever I’m feeling a little snacky, I make my way to this free museum.
It’s tiny, and full of cheese samples. I mean… do you really need more convincing?
Markets, parks, and classic Amsterdam views
10. Vondelpark
Rent a bike and cruise through Vondelpark. You’ll see dogs, rollerbladers, and very relaxed locals lying in the grass.
I visit this spot for some peace every time I’m in Amsterdam, and it never fails. Especially since it’s so big, it’s easy to find some space for yourself while you’re there.
11. Heineken Experience
The Heineken Experience is half museum, half beer-fueled theme park. You learn stuff. You drink stuff. You probably leave with a branded keychain.
It’s incredible to learn about the process of making the beer, and you get to try it and learn other fun facts about Heineken. If you’re a beer enthusiast, you’ll definitely enjoy this.
If you want to elevate your experience, then you need to do the VIP experience.
