Pizza, Pasta, and Peace of Mind: Do You Need Travel Insurance in Italy?

Have you ever wanted to stroll the ancient Roman streets, indulge in tiramisu or the finest gelato, or perhaps take a cruise along the Amalfi coast? Italy certainly is not short of activities, but the challenge might be fitting it into one trip.

If you’re anything like me, you might be sidetracked dreaming about all the pasta or wine you intend to indulge in and forgot one of the most important pieces of your travel puzzle.

It’s time to ask yourself this crucial question: Do you need travel insurance in Italy?

So, do you need travel insurance in Italy?

While travel insurance isn’t mandatory for entry into Italy, unlike some countries, that doesn’t mean that it’s not essential. While I was in Milan, I really needed to visit a doctor for a problem that I was having that was relatively urgent. Even though the issue didn’t start in Italy, it certainly did end there… you never expect to need travel insurance… until you need it.

Personally, I’m a big “what if” person when I’m home, and that attitude multiplies by 10 when I’m in a foreign country. I consider the “what if I fell in the canal and broke my leg” or the “what if I get so sick that I can’t make it to the hospital myself” or “what if my bag gets stolen or lost or broken.” And I prefer that the answers to my “what ifs” are that everything is going to be just fine, just enjoy Italy.

You might think to yourself: but I’m not doing anything dangerous, like paragliding or scuba diving… and that’s a common mistake that people make more often than not. For such a low price comparative to the cost of travel, it doesn’t make sense to go anywhere without it, and Italy is no exception.

I seriously hoped that, and even expected nothing to happen to me on my trip… and my health issues weren’t a result of the cool stuff I did, like when I did the 6 mile hike in the clouds along the cliffs of the Amalfi coast, known as the Path of the Gods.

And it wasn’t when I bought last minute ferry tickets from a man in the street at the start of this hike at a discounted price, so I could board an overcrowded boat to Amalfi… but rather from something less obvious: drinking water.

That case of gastroenteritis derailed a huge part of my trip. It got so bad, and I almost forgot that I had travel insurance, since I was so used to waiting to see if symptoms would subside in the U.S. to avoid an insanely high medical bill. Once I remembered that I was covered, I was able to get the tools I needed to get better faster. Personally, I’d rather get injured or sick in Italy.

The great thing about travel insurance is that the hardest part of using it is finding a doctor yourself (although some companies actually have a network available to take the guess work out of it). While I was in Milan, it was even easier for me since Italy has a ton of great tools to find doctors. I used a website called “Doctors in Italy,” and it surprisingly lived up to it’s namesake and found me a lovely doctor last minute in downtown Milan for what I considered to be a mild price.

Here are some reasons that you are going to want travel insurance to get you safely to, from, and everywhere in between in Italy:

Unexpected Medical Expenses:

Italy has an insanely good healthcare system (haven’t you noticed all the centennials?), but it’s not free for non-residents. Even a small medical situation could result in significant bills. Travel insurance will keep you covered so that you can focus on the treatment, rather than the cost. Imagine enjoying a delicious gelato, only to experience sudden food poisoning. With travel insurance, you can focus on recovery, knowing your medical expenses will be covered.

For my experience, I found that the biggest cost that I didn’t expect was prescriptions. After my doctor’s visit, I needed to buy almost €80 worth of prescriptions/medical supplies to follow through with the treatment she recommended (in the case that my symptoms progressed). I would’ve been thoroughly annoyed in the US if I had to buy a prescription that I wasn’t even sure I needed. In this case, I was ecstatic that I wouldn’t have to worry about dealing with another doctor’s visit while I was traveling (at least for now).

Trip Interruptions & Cancellations:

The best and also worst part of life is that it tends to be unexpected. A personal emergency back home, flight delays, or unexpected weather events could force you to cancel or interrupt your Italian dream vacation.

Travel insurance can reimburse pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs, so that you can worry about the problem, as opposed to the inconvenience/ financial blow of a disrupted itinerary. Picture yourself finally securing that coveted reservation at a Michelin-starred restaurant, only to have a family emergency force you to cancel at the last minute. Travel insurance can help recoup some of those lost costs.

Did I ever tell you about the time when my flight from Naples to Bulgaria was overbooked by 18 people, and the guy at the help desk said I should just wait to see if people miss their flight since the next available flight over there on that airline wasn’t for at least a week!

While I ultimately got on the flight (it only took a dedicated traveler (me) to wait for the 6 hour delayed flight to scare off other travelers (not me)). I am not ashamed to admit the Karen mode that I entered when I heard the news… especially since that’s the reason I was the first person from the overbooked list to get on the plane.

Theft or Loss of Belongings:

Pickpocketing and petty theft can happen anywhere, and Italy is no exception. Losing your phone, camera, or backpack filled with travel essentials can be a major setback. They may not be able to get your passport back, but at least the cost of replacement will ease your stress since travel insurance can help recoup the value of stolen or lost belongings.

Imagine exploring the vibrant streets of Naples when a crowded marketplace encounter leads to a pickpocketed wallet. Travel insurance can help ease with the financial headache of replacing your belongings.

Venice even has signs all over that remind tourists to pay attention to their stuff since the pickpockets there have gotten so good.

As a solo traveler, if I want any pictures of myself that are up to snuff, I need to get them myself… that means perching my phone and being at least an arms length distance of further to get the perfect shot (like this one). While I try to remain vigilant, things happen, and it’s nice to know I’m covered for when they do.

Beyond the Basics:

Many travel insurance plans offer additional benefits like trip delay coverage, baggage delay reimbursement, and even 24/7 emergency assistance. These can be lifesavers in unexpected situations.

Travel delays can mean missed connections and disrupted plans. Travel insurance with trip delay coverage can help offset the cost of unexpected accommodations or meals while you wait for your next flight.
